Most people associate the word ‘zodiac’ with astrology, however, the zodiac plays an important part in astronomy too! The zodiac is known as the zone in the heavens around the ecliptic, where the movement of the sun and planets are observed. The zodiac is traditionally divided into twelve constellations, which correspond to the twelve traditional zodiac signs.
The 12 signs listed in a horoscope are derived from the constellations that mark out the path on which the sun appears to travel over the course of a year. Most people think that the dates in a horoscope correspond to when the sun passes through each constellation, however, this is not true. Astrology and Astronomy are different systems, therefore the dates and times for each horoscope sign do not match the annual journey of each constellation.
For example, the Aries indicates a constellation of the zodiac. This constellation is crossed by the Sun from April 19th until May 13th. The Aries also indicates a sign of the zodiac, corresponding to the sector of 30° of the ecliptic and is crossed by the Sun from March 21st until April 19th, the date of the ecliptic corresponds to the traditional dates of the horoscope.
